Associations & Institutes

New South Wales Rowing Association (NSWRA)

http://www.rowingnsw.asn.au :: NSWRA is the governing body for all rowing in NSW, it was founded in 1878 (five years after MRC). The initial impetus for the formation of the Association was a challenge from our neighbouring state of Victoria (or colony as it was in those days) for a race to be conducted in 1879. Things haven’t changed much since - just more states to challenge for racing supremacy in Australia. Since 1878 the number of rowing clubs in NSW has grown from three clubs at the time the Association was established to more than 30 clubs today, not counting a host of schools with rowing programs.The New South Wales Rowing Association governs the sport of rowing in NSW. It decides on the rules for racing in NSW, determines boat classes for racing events, sets an annual calendar of regattas, and promotes the rowing in this state.Through the club and school system the sport caters for male and female rowers from elite to novice level including disabled athletes. Membership of the NSW Association is around 2500 to 3000 members.

Rowing Australia (RA)

RA is responsible for selection of representative Australian teams for the Olympic Games, World Championships, World Under 23 Championships, Trans Tasman teams and Junior World Championships. It also conducts national regattas including the Australian Championships.RA is recognized by FISA (Federation Internationale des Societies d’Aviron - the International Rowing Federation) which itself is a constituent member of the IOC and is therefore a sport eligible for inclusion in the Olympic Games. RA was initially established on 1st May 1925 as the Australian Amateur Rowing Council. It was incorporated on the 15th of November 1982, changed its name to Australian Rowing Council Inc in 1984 and finally Rowing Australia Inc on 2nd March 1996.

New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) :: Rowing

http://www.nswis.com.au/ :: Mosman Rowing Club has had a long as a NSWIS Rowing Venue and has been now assigned as a NSWIS Elite Development Centre. The NSWIS Rowing Program provides elite athletes and coaches to a variety of national teams. The Program is led by Technical Coordinator Dr. Andrew Randell with support from Elite Development Coach Stani Slavova and Program Coordinator Matt Draper.The strength of the NSWIS Rowing Program is its access to world class coaching expertise, equipment and athlete support services through the elite club network in NSW. The Program’s ability to draw upon expert local knowledge from network coaches based in High Performance (HP) and Elite Development (ED) Centres has also proved invaluable.The NSWIS Rowing Program currently supports a number of World Champions, World Cup and international medallists.

Federation Internationale des Societies d’Aviron (FISA) :: World Rowing Federation

It is empowered by its 120 member National Rowing Federations, the National Olympic Committees and the International Olympic Committee to govern the sport of rowing.FISA sets the rules and regulations for the practice of the sport, in all its forms (elite, adaptive, and soon coastal and indoor), and organises sanctioned World Rowing events. It also provides advice and expertise for the organisation of rowing regattas, on coaching education and other matters relating to the sport and its development.FISA was founded by representatives from France, Switzerland, Belgium, Adriatica (now a part of Italy) and Italy in Turin on June 25, 1892. It is the oldest international sports federation in the Olympic movement. Its first headquarters office was established in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1922 and, after moving away, returned to its roots in February 1996.

While some boat builders were attempting to combine the traditional craft skills with new technology, no Australian builder of racing shells had effectively made the transition to the techniques of composite materials. This technique of material use was first engineered in the aerospace industry and successfully employed in the yachting industry where Australia had achieved the building of sailing yachts equal to any in the world - winning the America’s Cup, Admirals Cup and Olympic class races.The ideologies of boat performance in the racing shell and that of the aerospace and yachting materials are very similar, and so became the birth of the company Australian Rowing Technology - Ausrowtec. Rowperfect :: Rowing Ergometer

Nielsen Kellerman (NK) :: Rowing Equipment

http://www.nk.com.au/ :: Richard Kellerman and Paul Nielsen established NK in 1978. Richard was working as a Physical Chemist at Xerox Inc., when Coach Ted Nash recruited him to devise a product that would simplify the coxswain’s many jobs on the river.
With the collaboration of Paul Nielsen, an associate from Xerox Inc., Richard Kellerman was convinced that he could create one unit to combine the tasks of an amplifier/stroke meter/timer to simplify the coxswain’s job. The idea to create a Cox-BoxÆ amplifier came to Richard after watching a coxswain run his crew into a bridge during a regatta.In 1984, NK expanded their product line to include the original StrokeCoachÆ stroke meter, designed for scullers and straight boats so that they, too, could know their stroke rate and time. Following the success of the StrokeCoachÆ, NK designed the Chronostroke rate and stop watch for rowing coaches, and developed and manufactured the original monitor for the Concept II rowing machine.Since then they have continued to design and develop many rowing technologies.

Croker Oars

Howard was an enthusiastic coach and for some years 1975-76 he coached at The Scots College in Sydney. Howard was also a successful rower in the 1960’s, winning both State and National rowing titles. He rowed for the then Haberfield rowing club in Sydney, at Dobroyd Point. His oars were used by mainly by school boy crews and expanded to be used by local Australian rowing clubs, Australian international crews, and many others across the world.
