NSW Rowing Championships   February 2012

Thirty six of Mosman's finest athletes are heading off to Penrith to compete in the NSW Rowing Championships at SIRC from Friday 10th February to Sunday 12th February 2012. Our squads and coaches have put in endless hours on the water and in the gym to peak for this important event, and we're hopeful of seeing some great racing and even better results for Mosman.

The Mosman tent will be set up on the bank overlooking the course and we're hoping to get as many loud and enthusiastic supporters as we can to help lift our rowers. Racing starts at 2pm Friday and finishes 5pm Sunday.

Spotlight on ... Nick Garratt

We are fortunate to have one of Australia's most experienced rowing coaches leading Mosman's Coaching team.

Nick Garratt has been coaching at a State, National and International level since 1988 and has a long and distinguished track record of success.

Starting as Head Coach at Haberfield [now UTS) in 1988, Nick went on to become Talent ID Coach at the WA Institute of Sport in 1995 and WA team coach in 2001. He brought unprecedented success for Western Australia at all levels including first Australian Under 23 Eight, Junior Quad, Junior single scull, Junior women's single scull, to name a few.

In addition to his WA duties, Nick commenced coaching national crews from 1995. In 1996, two national crews coached by Nick won gold medals in the World Championships at Strathclyde. Nick coached three national crews in 1997, including our own Peter Hardcastle (PH) in the Under 23 Quad in Milan. In 1998 Nick coached three national crews and became Senior Coach of the WA Institute of Sport, this time taking the Under 23 Men's Quad to Gold in Greece.

In 1999 Nick secured WA's first win in the Kings Cup Men's Eight in 26 years. He also took the men's quad to a Bronze medal in St Catherine's, Canada - Australia's first ever men's quad scull medal at World Championships. In 2000 he had 5 athletes selected into the national team and 2 into the Olympics, and again coached the national men's quad to 4th place in the Sydney Olympics.

From his first year in WA in 1992, Nick placed 3 athletes in the national junior, Under 23 or senior teams, rising every year until he departed in 2001 with 20 athletes.

In 2001 Nick took up the position of senior coach at the NSW Institute of Sport and coached three national crews with success at Henley and World Championships. In 2002 he coached Tom Laurich and Robert Jahrling to a Bronze medal in the World Championships in Seville (Australia's men's only medal at for 2002). In 2003 Nick had a further 2 national crews win Silver medals. In 2004 Nick had 3 athletes selected in the Olympic team. Of the 45 athletes in the 2004 Australian Olympic Rowing Team, Nick has personally coached 25 of them.

Under Nick's careful guidance, Mosman Rowing Club is now rated as one of the top training centres in NSW and Australia.

But wait! There's more ...

In addition to Nick Garratt's outstanding skills as a coach, he is also an accomplished still and video photographer and produced many of the images published in Mosman Rowing Club's recent Centenary Book.

The Spirit of Mosman Rowing

What is it, this "spirit" of Mosman? How do you capture an essence?

Well, it is easier to state what the Club is and wants to be: an elite rowing club that is also a club for all the talents. We will always strive to develop, nurture and promote our elite athletes – what is the point of it all, unless you aim to be the very best?

Whether elite, development, junior or masters all Mosman members share a common love of rowing and racing.

And the Mosman "spirit" emerges in races. It is that indefinable never-say-die quality of all Mosman crews that makes red and white so feared and respected at start lines everywhere.

We know – and our competitors know – that Mosman will always be committed and courageous; will keep on coming to the last stroke if behind and will be ruthless in keeping a lead if ahead; and will gracefully acknowledge a better performance on the day...while vowing under the breath to work even harder and to "get you next time!".

The Mosman Spirit extends off water as well, with lifelong friendships forged on the pontoon and between generations. Our commitment and dedication to the red'n'white is generated by our members; sportsmen and women of all ages and abilities who share a common love of rowing.

The Mosman Spirit has developed over more than 100 years and is now in the safe hands of a new generation of young Mosman rowers who will continue to define what it means to be part of Mosman Rowing Club for many years to come.
