NICK GARRATT
Head Coach
Nationality: Australian (WA)
MRC is fortunate to have one of Australia’s most experienced rowing coaches leading the team. Nick has been coaching at a State, national and international level since 1988.
From Head Coach at Haberfield [now UTS) 1988- 92, to Talent ID Coach at the WA Institute of Sport to 1995, to WA team coach to 2001 bringing unprecedented success for WA at all levels including first Australian Under 23 Eight, Junior Quad, Junior single scull, Junior women’s single scull, to name a few In addition to his WA duties, Nick commenced coaching national crews from 1995. In 1996, two national crews coached by Nick won gold medals in the World Championships at Strathclyde. Nick coached three national crews in 1997, including our own Peter Hardcastle (PH) in the Under 23 Quad in Milan. In 1998 Nick coached three national crews and became Senior Coach of the WA Institute of Sport, this time taking the Under 23 Men’s Quad (including PH) to Gold in loannina, Greece - (first ever in this event for Australia). In 1999 Nick secured WA’s first win in the Kings Cup Men’s Eight in 26 years. He also took the men’s quad to a Bronze medal in St Catherine’s, Canada - Australia’s first ever men’s quad scull medal at World Championships. In 2000 he had 5 athletes selected into the national team and 2 into the Olympics, and again coached the national men’s quad to 4th place in the Sydney Olympics.
From his first year in WA in 1992, Nick placed 3 athletes in the national junior, Under 23 or senior teams, rising every year until he departed in 2001 with 20 athletes.
In 2001 Nick took up the position of senior coach at the NSW Institute of Sport and coached three national crews with success at Henley and World Championships. In 2002 he coached Tom Laurich and Robert Jahrling to a Bronze medal in the World Championships in Seville (Australia’s men’s only medal at for 2002). In 2003 Nick had a further 2 national crews win Silver medals. In 2004 Nick had 3 athletes selected in the Olympic team. Of the 45 athletes in the 2004 Australian Olympic Rowing Team, Nick has personally coached 25 of them. Under Nick's careful guidance, we are now rated as one of the top training centres in NSW and Australia.
LINDA READ
Juniors Coach
Nationality: Australian
Linda commenced the Learn to Row programme for high school students in 2006. It proved popular and a small squad formed and first represented Mosman when a group of 12 juniors attended the Central Districts rowing regatta in Taree in March 2007. The squad reformed for the 2007/8 season with their major rowing goal being the State Championships 2008. The junior girls achieved their goal to become WU16 4x State Champions as well as winning medals in other events. Having achieved solid results ever since, the junior squad continues to set their goals on success at State Level.
The squad consists of students from Mackellar Girls, Monte Saint Angelo, Killara High, Stella Maris, Kambala Girls High, Pymble Ladies College, Manly Selective High & Rose Bay College.
STEVE "ROCKY" GORDON
Masters Coach
Nationality: Australian
Steve started rowing as a teenager at The Scots College in Sydney, joining Mosman RC in 1973. He raced at Maiden, Junior and Senior level with the Club achieving Victorian, N.S.W. and Australian Championships along the way, and retired from competitive rowing at the end of 1980.
During the 1980s he took up coaching and was accredited by the AIS. Steve successfully coached novice and lightweight crews for Mosman as well as school crews at The Scots College with many winning combinations at both Clubs.
After taking a break from rowing to raise his family, Rocky returned to the Club in 2000 to take up Masters Rowing in order to keep fit. Racing as a Master, Rocky enjoyed a successful run, winning at the club level, along with State and National Titles. Together with other members of our strong Masters' squad, Rocky has had some wonderful moments on overseas campaigns at the World Masters Championships in Vichy, France and Zagreb, Croatia as well as the World Masters Games in Melbourne, Sydney and Edmonton and racing at Henley Veterans Regatta in the United Kingdom, winning many gold medals at these events.
In 2008, Rocky returned to coaching, this time for the Club's successful Masters Women squad. He now also coaches the Masters Men at Mosman. Under Rocky's watchful eye, the Masters Women and Men have won NSW Masters Pennants, State and National titles in all classes of boat and were very successful at the last World Masters Games in Sydney where Mosman crews won multiple gold medals. Rocky also provides coaching support to the Club's elite and junior squads.
Rocky continues to give back to the sport that he loves through coaching.
