Our Fantastic Five

Everyone at Mosman should be, and definitely are, proud of the performances of our senior athletes at the recent Olympic selection regatta. With some fantastic racing and tough selection we are proud to announce that all four of our trialling athletes and head coach have been named in the squads from which they will be selected to represent this wonderful country in Beijing later this year! (see Rowing Australia official release [pdf])

Women’s Sculling Squad

Amy Ives and Zoe Uphill executed some marvellous racing to secure their seats in the women’s sculling squad that is to be coached by our very own Nick Garratt.

The squad (awaiting finalising in April) will be based here in NSW, training down at Mosman - so keep your eye out for them and you’ll be lucky enough to congratulate them many times over - I’m sure a big healthy meal, or coffee and banana bread would never go astray with these girls sticking around!

Men’s Eight

Mosman Rowing Club’s long-time champion oarsman, Tom Laurich, has been training like a machine down in the AIS facility in our nations capital and it has certainly paid off. He has been named in the squad for the Men’s Eight. Although the crew is yet to be finalised by the AOC, Tom earned his stripes in the selection trials with some fantastic, unquestionably brilliant results!

Men’s Quad/Single Squad

Well… Pete Hardcastle has certainly had quite the season! After an unfortunate battle at the selection trials last year, he did us proud by putting in the hard training hours and getting a fantastic result at the Henley Royal Regatta in London. This made him the obvious choice for the Men’s Single Scull when the opportunity arose. He took to the opportunity of his first international representative single sculling race at the World Championships to qualify the boat for Beijing. This trend has continued all year to bring him to the point of this fantastic achievement in qualifying for the Men’s Quad/Single squad

Dan Noonan did us proud getting back on the horse after an injury last season that stole the Single Scull away from him leading into the world championships. He has worked hard and long during the off-season and leading up to selection. This was his foundations when he blew the competition away at the recent selection trials, securing his position alongside Pete in the Men’s Quad/Single squad. We’ll miss the boys as they train down in the southernmost, cold parts of our country (Tasmania).

So… look out for the final selection and naming of crews in April because these fantastic athletes (and coach) are on track for Beijing!

  1. Stuart Sincock Says:

Congratulations for the results so far, not just to the athletes and Nick but to the Committee and all the members of the Club that have helped build a strong base from which they have launched themselves.

It’s been tremendous what has been done to turn the Club’s fortunes around from dire straits in the early 90s when the Club near went down and we had no Olympic representation at ‘92. All of those that have done so much (even those that have done their part) deserve a pat on the back and should hopefully realise that they’ve done their part in this great achievement.
