National Selection Report 2007

Dear all,

A quick summary of our performances at the just completed nation al selection trials

In a very tough 11 days of racing, we are very proud to advise that Mosman has two new first- time Australian team members.

Amy Ives has been selected as the stroke of the womens’ quad scull, and Zoe Uphill as our single scull representative.

We are all extremely proud of them- they fought their way through 12 gruelling races in conditions that were as stressful mentally as they were physically.

Consider: the results at the 2006 World Championships placed the Australian women’s rowing team as the strongest in the world, and for two new athletes to break into this team is remarkable- especially in the year just prior to the Olympics.

There are just 7 scullers in the team and Mosman has produced 2 of them - more than Qld, Victoria, WA, SA and Tassy!

Amy and Zoe both did it the tough way too, with both working fulltime up until the nationals- Amy then having to move to Canberra, with all the stress involved in that, and Zoe continuing to work and study full time.

Tom Laurich has once again been chosen in the mens 8 after some extremely close racing- winning three vital races by 0.13″, 0.2″ and 0.46″.

They aim to bring home some serious hardware this year.

Dan Noonan, back at Mosman again, will represent Australia in the single scull at the World Cup regattas in Linz, Austria and Amsterdam and then perhaps race the quad in Munich .

Peter Hardcastle missed the Aussie team for the first time since 1997, but is likely to race in Europe as part of his campaign to win his place back for 2008

Luke Freeman who raced in the under 23 lightweight division aged 17, just missed the final cut, but with several more years in that category ahead of him, will surely wear the green and gold before long

Brynne Allen - currently at a selection camp at the AIS, missed by one spot after just 5 days together with her new partner from Adelaide – well raced Brynne.

Thanks to all for your encouragement and support

Regards,
Nick Garratt

The water was beautiful but the conditions (as in the situation of racing for your seat in the National Team) were stressful
