2007 Corporate Rowing Program

ANOTHER(!) MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

To all members:

The annual Commonwealth Bank Corporate Rowing program starts this week.

This is an important event for us, and the revenue we earn from it represents a significant part of the Club’s annual income.
The program commences with a cocktail party on Thursday (hosted by the bank) at which crews will be assigned racing colours, training days and coaches. Thereafter, CBA crews will be training from Pearl Bay every morning until Sunday 6 May, when we hold their annual regatta over a 300 metre course at Davison Park (just beyond the Roseville Bridge).

This year, largely as a result of the success of the program last year, we have been asked to increase the number of CBA crews to 16. Steve Evans has taken on the role of overall program director, with Tony Blay once again managing the day to day running of the program (making sure we have enough boats, coaches, tinnies, breakfasts, etc) and keeping them all operating every day for a month.

There is no way we can run a corporate program as big as this one without it causing some disruption and inconvenience to the Club. On most mornings for the next month, we will have up to 8 eights (mainly crewed by novices) getting on and off the water - this can take a while even for experienced crews, let alone crews comprising novice rowers and novice coxwains.

So, for all of you who will be rowing at the shed during the next month or so, I urge you to be understanding and try to do whatever you can to assist the CBA rowers and their coaches. In particular:

  • Try to fit your own rowing around the CBA program - perhaps by rowing a little earlier or later than usual - or perhaps by boating from the beach when the pontoon is crowded.
  • Spare a thought for Tony Blay. He will be there every single morning and will be under enormous pressure, so please give him your co-operation and lend him a hand if he needs one.
  • Make the CBA rowers feel welcome. Remember many of them may be a little anxious and nervous around the shed at first. It is important to us that all the CBA rowers have a enjoyable experience with us, and that they can’t wait to come back again next year!
  • If you are out on the water, stay alert. There will be a larger than usual number of inexperienced coxwains on the water and (despite everyone’s best efforts) they will not always be where you expect them to be and they will not always be able to see you. Be particularly careful in the area between the Bluff and the shed.

Finally, we have a large number of MRC rowers and former rowers of all ages and stages who have put their hands up to help run this program (whether as coaches, pontoon stewards, breakfast makers or whatever). You are all legends, and I thank you all for offering your services so willingly. Let’s hope we can make this year’s event (in the immortal words of Graeme Jones) “the best CBA Corporate Rowing Program ever!”
Yours sincerely,

Bryan Weir
President
