Manning River & Port Macquarie 2007

MOSMAN DIGS IT OARS IN AT THE MANNING RIVER AND PORT MACQUARIE ROWING CLUB REGTTAS.

On the weekend of the 13th and 14th January, a group of the Mosman Masters travelled to Taree for the combined regattas staged by the Manning River and the Port Macquarie Rowing Clubs.
Banjo, Dasher, Dolly, Dru, Chappo, Coon, Feral, Rocky, The Struikmiester, Titts, Willo and Lord Hardy were joined by Paul Bartels, Annie, Liz, Marg and Sally together with Crew Mascots Erica and Lois and Support Staff Alexa to BLITZ the two day event winning a swag of medals.

Gold medals were won in the VM 4-,VM 4X, VM 1X (3), VW 1X, Super G3 VIII, Universal 1X, VM VIII, Super G2 VIII (over 2,000 metres with the addition of Paul Webster who was at the Regatta coaching Tara School) and the VW 2X.

We also won a large number of silver and bronze medals. The depth of the Club’s Masters Program can be gauged by the fact that in more than one event it was a Mosman quinella crossing the line with “daylight” third.

The most exciting race over the two days was the Men’s Masters Pair where Titts and Lord Hardy gave away a massive 20 seconds to a very experienced Hunter crew only to be pipped by half a bow-ball on the line.

The most dramatic race, however, was the Men’s Super G2 VIII over 2,000 meters where our crew (some of whom had rowed the previous two races winning the Super G3 VIII and the Men’s Masters VIII over 1,000 meters) won ahead of some young crews by nearly 2 lengths. The start was fine until about the tenth stroke when someone who will remain nameless (Chappo) lost his blade out of the gate. Not wanting to let the other crews get away, we powered on while the 2 man valiantly struggled to get his oar back in the gate…..only to lose it AGAIN. Race footage will show that by this time we were at least “10” lengths behind. Finally, having secured his oar we set off and with a HERCULEAN effort caught the field by the 1200 meter mark and then rowed away to win by clear water. A race that will no doubt go down in the folklore of the Club as one of our finest!

It was a great weekend and thoroughly enjoyed by all of us who attended.

The age and state of mind of two of our masters showed through in one of the Men’s Doubles when they got on the water only to find they had put their riggers on back to front! Rather than backing down the course they swapped them around, where cautioned at the start but still won Gold. The Captain is preparing simple rigging instructions (including directionary arrows) for them for the next Regatta just in case they have forgotten by then!

Special thanks to Rob Drury for towing the trailer and Jim Taylor for taking boats, riggers, seats etc.

John Dollisson
Club Captain.
