US Masters - over and out

Currently in London on route to Mumbai. Getting through security here is harder than winning a medal in the US Masters!

The final day of the US Masters was the best weather on tour and the racing started with John Dollisson and Mark Williams competing against each other in two E4x’s with composite crews. After a false start John’s crew won Gold and marks Silver well ahead of the rest of the field.

Annie Taylor then raced her E1x in a small boat to 5th place in the final.

It was then time to avenge our broken oar in the D4x final in the C4x final with much hotter competition and a few years younger. We ended up in third place just under a second shy of second. Once again the “Rocky Mountain” crew won the event. We visited a few buoys on the way down but kept the oars intact.

Annie then raced in her E2x against a strong field and was placed third for a bronze medal. Annie has been the most successful Mosman medal winner on the tour.

The final race for the day was the D4+ with a hot field. We drew lane 6 and for some reason were pushed over to Lane 7 in the windiest area of the course. We started well and were in contention up until the 500m mark when the Kent Mitchel Crew took the lead and in the end we can in third by a whisker.

A great regatta with 2 Golds, 4 Silvers, 4 Bronzes a broken seat and a broken oar. We made every final we entered except the D8+ due to the broken seat and medalled in all but two of the remaining events, one due to the broken oar.

The standard of rowing at the US Masters is very good, and has improved substantially since our last visit in 2001.

Lessons for Mosman- spend less time in India before regattas, learn to steer and lift oars over 12 inch buoys, more race training over the 1,000 m course, and get Annie to coach us on how to win medals!

We had a great regatta and trip to the US which is continuing for Mark Campbell and the girls and Anne and James for a week.

Your traveling Captain from Heathrow after surviving his third full body search and carrying his possessions in a clear plastic bag!

See you back on the water in a few weeks.

Don’t forget the Mosman Matathon on 2 September. We want to see a full turnout of Mosman Rowers.

Regards
John Dollisson
